British Acting Minister for Magic, Stamford Jorkins, yesterday announced that he would do "everything in his power" to close down the Nurmengard detainment facility. "Nurmengard could be the safest place to hold some of the world's darkest wizards, but it will not do so at the cost of our moral compass, which under previous leadership, has been set back almost irreparably," he said, referring to the recent sacking of former Minister for Magic, Kingsley Shacklebolt, following Shacklebolt's public endorsement of the prison.
Nurmengard is a highly controversial detainment facility somewhere in Continental Europe, started in the 1940's by the dark wizard Grindelwald to hold anyone who opposed him, but was later himself imprisoned in it. The unethical treatment of prisoners, the use of potions deemed inhuman to administer to any wizard or muggle, and the unlawful use of the Unforgivable Curses, has caused it to face numerous protests over the years.
Around the same time Shacklebolt was elected Minister eleven years ago, the famous dark wizard Lord Voldemort reportedly 'flew' in and killed Grindelwald on the top-most floor of the structure. This prompted the American and British Ministries to take over the then completely abandoned prison, citing poor security as the reason for occupation. Nurmengard has since been an unplottable location for detaining any wizard even remotely suspected of plotting against either of the ministries, or against the general muggle population. Unconfirmed reports of Dementor presence began circulating last year, bringing international spotlight onto the matter.
Longstanding supporter of the Shacklebolt regime and Ministry spokeswizard, P.I. Weasley, was unable for comment.
